Adoption of Constitution1.1 The Association and its property shall be administered and managed in accordance with the provisions of the constitution of the Association.

The Name2.1 The Association’s name is the “British Muslim Association of Merton” (BMAM).

The Aims and ObjectivesThe Association is established for the benefit of the Muslim community in the London Borough of Merton and the surrounding area for the following objectives:-
3.1 The advancement of the Islamic faith;
3.2 The advancement of education of the public in Islamic cultures; and
3.3 The relief of poverty
In furtherance of the objectives, the Association may:
Establish an Islamic centre for the furtherance of the Association;
Provide facilities for Islamic studies, etiquette and the understanding of Islamic culture;
Arrange Islamic lectures, meetings, seminars and similar functions of topics of interest to the Muslim community;
Assist and help in the event of bereavement of Muslims by referring the families to the appropriate burial services;
Organise and undertake such other events to promote the spirit of Islam and the understanding of its disciplines;
Co-operate and create understanding with other bodies of similar objectives within the London Borough of Merton and beyond.

Membership4.1 All adults professing Islamic faith, recognising the Holy Quran, Sunnah and Hadith and believing in the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) as the last prophet of Allah, shall be eligible for membership of the Association.

4.2 There shall be a membership fee payable by each member of the Association. The amount shall be decided by the Executive Committee (EC) of the Association and may change from time to time.

4.3 There shall be a maximum of 15 EC members at any given time. The tenure for each position shall be two calendar years. All members should be practising Muslims as defined in the membership rules in clause (4.1) above.

4.4 Non-Muslims and non-members may be invited to attend the functions organised by BMAM and at its AGM.

Management5.1 The management of the Association shall vest and continue to be vested in the EC which shall consist of the following:
Chairperson
Vice-Chairperson
General Secretary
Assistant General Secretary
Treasurer
EC members

5.2 A quorum of two-thirds shall be sufficient to conduct the business of the Association. Minutes shall be recorded in all proceedings in a register of the Association.

5.3 The EC shall meet at least six times during one calendar year, at a prearranged venue and time.

Election of Office Bearers6.1 Every two years the Office Bearer and members of the EC shall retire and shall be eligible for re-election at the AGM.
Election of the EC shall be by the vote at the AGM. Voting shall be by a secret ballot and every member shall be eligible to vote for as many candidates as there are vacancies to be filled. The candidates who receive the largest number of votes shall be declared as elected. In the case of two or more candidates receiving an equal number of votes, the Chairperson shall have a second or casting vote.

6.2 Nominations for the election of office bearers and executive committee (EC) member should be submitted to the Election Officer in a sealed envelope at least 21 days before the AGM.
Nomination form should be filled in and duly signed and dated by the Nominator, who should be a current member of BMAM.
Nominator should indicate the name of the candidate (Nominee) and the position applied for on an approved nomination form.
Candidates (Nominee) can only apply for one position from office bearers list, but can additionally apply for the EC Members position as well. Sealed nomination form should be opened by the Election Officer at an EC meeting held at least 14 days before the AGM.
The Election Officer can reject a nomination form which has been incorrectly completed.
The nomination form should also be signed by the Nominee to confirm approval.

6.3) All members should be fully paid up and registered members and be affiliated with the organisation for at least one month prior to the AGM to be eligible to nominate a candidate, been nominated themselves and also vote for the executive committee at an AGM.
